Infiltration and Intelligence Incursion
By Blerim Abedini ISSD-NM– For decades, the US engagement in Middle Eastern conflicts has fluctuated between military intervention, diplomatic mediation, and deterrence. Since the military interventions of the last century, military strategy has shifted, with technology playing a crucial role in these evolving military actions.
In this dynamic context, the question arises whether Israel is becoming an observer and active counterweight in the Iran conflict. Rather than waiting for potential threats on its borders, Israel is increasingly focusing its military intelligence and operational reach on directly observing, monitoring, and disrupting strategic military developments on Iranian territory.
This proactive stance is most clearly demonstrated by Israel’s reactivation of its strategy to target and eliminate commanders of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). By specifically targeting high-ranking military leaders, Quds Force commanders, and key technical advisors responsible for projecting power abroad, Israel aims to dismantle the command structure that directs regional proxy operations and weakens Iran’s conventional and asymmetric capabilities. This is a new strategy for eliminating political and military leaders, which has emerged with the development and use of drones and the support of satellite systems for navigation and precise targeting. The elimination of politicians and military personnel is already being adopted by other countries, as demonstrated by the assassination attempt on President Trump at the NATO summit in Ankara—a plot that remains unsolved. Some time ago, there was a Ukrainian drone attack on President Putin’s house. In Iran, influenced by these developments, the religious leader Mujtaba has altered his communication with the military guard and appointed indirect spokespeople to interpret his words. Economically and strategically, the conflict often centers on strategically important sea lanes. A key question is whether the Strait of Hormuz poses a genuine obstacle to agreements and stability. Historically, the Strait of Hormuz was one of the world’s most important sea lanes, connecting ancient trade routes from the Persian Gulf to the Indian Ocean. Today, the Strait of Hormuz carries approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Iran’s frequent threats to disrupt or block shipping through the Strait of Hormuz serve as a strategic tool, regularly disrupting diplomatic negotiations and increasing global economic risks. It’s fair to say that Hormuz has become a power play between Iran and the United States. President Trump’s resignation is palpable; he refuses to move beyond the context: “Hormuz is mine, it’s not yours!” Hormuz is thus portrayed as a buffer zone into which even China and Russia—apart from satellite communications and arms shipments—cannot intervene. Yet the Hormuz issue appears to have a deterrent effect, narrowing the political-military agenda by allowing the US midterm elections time to remain unaffected by the Middle East conflict.
This raises a more fundamental question: Can the Middle East become a peaceful region if Iran’s financial activities in Palestine, Lebanon, and Yemen are curtailed? Tehran’s “axis of resistance”—which finances and arms groups like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis—allows Iran to exert power without being directly involved in state-to-state wars. Proponents of tough sanctions argue that cutting off these financial flows is essential for stabilizing the region.
A further complication of the conflict is global rivalry, which is reshaping the region. Reports highlight Russia’s increasing satellite reconnaissance support for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. In exchange for Iranian drones and military equipment, Moscow provides high-resolution satellite imagery that helps the Revolutionary Guard monitor the locations of U.S. bases, troop movements, and regional military operations in the Gulf.
This cooperation is complemented by China’s involvement in arms deals and oil-for-arms agreements with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. By purchasing Iranian oil at low prices, Beijing secures a vital economic lifeline for Tehran, while reports indicate that Chinese state-owned and privately held companies are supplying the Revolutionary Guard with components, air defense equipment, and missile technology.
These interconnected factors illustrate how local conflicts, proxy financing, and the alliance of global superpowers interact to make peace in the Middle East a complex and challenging endeavor.
These interconnected factors illustrate how local conflicts, intermediary financing, and the alliance of global superpowers interact to make peace in the Middle East a complex challenge. Given that Iran was expected to follow a similar path to Iraq, moving toward a political transition, working with Iran presents its own set of difficulties. We observe a bureaucracy of the religious elite, closely linked to the Revolutionary Guard, whose political decisions are highly influential. Other institutions, such as the presidential office and parliament, are also present and bear significant responsibility.
Reports of planned attacks and assassinations by the Revolutionary Guard in hostile countries echo the chronology of past attacks worldwide. For example, the religious leader Mujtaba, based on some analysts’ reports, seeks revenge for the murder of his family members and maintains his demands for military reparations from the US. However, the US fleet stationed in the Indian Ocean will not tolerate any assassination plots!
